  • Apply for SSDI online at ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213
  • Gather medical records, doctor contact info, and work history
  • Document all conditions โ€” list every diagnosis, not just the primary one
  • Note your exact last day of work
3โ€“6 months

Initial decision

  • SSA reviews your application โ€” most initial claims take 3-6 months
  • Respond promptly to any requests for additional information
  • Continue medical treatment and keep detailed records
  • Most initial applications are denied โ€” this is normal, not final
If denied

Appeal immediately

  • File a Request for Reconsideration within 60 days of denial
  • Consider hiring a disability attorney (they work on contingency)
  • Gather additional medical evidence to strengthen your case
  • Request an ALJ hearing if reconsideration is also denied
If approved

After approval

  • Understand your back pay โ€” benefits may go back to your application date
  • Medicare eligibility begins 24 months after SSDI approval
  • Report any work activity or income changes to SSA promptly
  • Review Ticket to Work program if you want to return to work

Critical deadlines

Don't miss these
time-sensitive steps

ASAP
Apply as soon as possible

SSDI has a 5-month waiting period from your disability onset date. The sooner you apply, the sooner benefits can begin.

60 days
Appeal a denial

You have 60 days plus 5 days for mailing to appeal a denial. Missing this window means starting the entire process over.

5 months
Waiting period

SSDI has a mandatory 5-month waiting period. Benefits begin on the 6th full month of disability.

24 months
Medicare eligibility

Medicare coverage begins 24 months after your first month of SSDI entitlement. Plan your healthcare coverage accordingly.

Immediately
Report income changes

If you receive SSDI and return to work or earn income, you must report it to SSA immediately to avoid overpayment issues.

Varies
Private disability insurance

Short-term disability typically has a 7-30 day waiting period. Long-term disability kicks in after 90-180 days. Check your policy.
